Frequently Asked Questions
General
Where is MixDen Studio located?
We're based in Reading, Berkshire, UK. Just 25 minutes from London Paddington by train, making us easily accessible for London-based artists while offering competitive rates and a relaxed working environment.
Do you offer remote services?
Yes! The majority of our mixing and mastering work is done remotely. You can send us your files via our secure upload system, and we'll deliver the finished product digitally. We also offer attended sessions if you prefer to be present.
What makes MixDen different from other studios?
MixDen is built around decisions, not presets. We combine world-class analog hardware — including tools from SSL, Neve, and Empirical Labs — with modern digital workflows that prioritise clarity, translation, and longevity. The studio is led by engineers with professional backgrounds at Metropolis Studios and the Abbey Road Institute, bringing major-studio standards and experience into a focused, independent environment. The result is a level of care, accuracy, and musical judgement typically associated with top-tier facilities — without unnecessary overheads or compromise.
Can I visit the studio before booking?
Absolutely! We offer studio tours by appointment. It's a great way to see our setup, meet the team, and discuss your project in person. Contact us to arrange a visit.
File Delivery
What file formats do you accept?
For mixing, we accept WAV or AIFF files at 24-bit or higher, at your project's native sample rate. Please ensure all tracks start at the same point (from bar 1) and are clearly labeled. For mastering, we prefer WAV files at 24-bit with 3-6dB of headroom.
How should I organize my files for mixing?
Name your tracks clearly (e.g., "Kick In", "Snare Top", "Lead Vocal"). Export all tracks from the same start point. Include a rough mix for reference. Consolidate any virtual instrument tracks to audio. Remove any master bus processing unless it's integral to the sound.
What do you deliver?
We deliver high-resolution WAV files (24-bit) in your preferred sample rate. For mixing, we can provide stereo mix, instrumental, TV mix, and stems if requested. For mastering, we provide formats optimized for streaming platforms, CD, and vinyl if needed.
How do I send large files?
We'll provide you with a secure upload link via WeTransfer Pro or Dropbox. For very large projects, we can arrange alternative solutions.

Technical
Do you mix in-the-box or analog?
We use a hybrid approach. Mixing is done in Pro Tools, monitored through PMC IB1 speakers and converted via Crane Song Quantum. Analog summing is available through the SSL X-Desk or Dangerous 2-Bus+, with outboard processing from Neve, Maselec, and Empirical Labs used where it counts. This gives us the best of both worlds: digital recall with analog character and world-class monitoring.
What DAW do you use?
We work in Pro Tools Ultimate, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live. For remote projects, we accept properly exported WAV stems from any DAW — no need to match our setup.
Can you match a reference track?
Yes, reference tracks are extremely helpful. We can analyze your reference and aim for a similar tonal balance, dynamics, and loudness while maintaining your track's unique character. Include references with your submission.
What sample rate should I use?
We recommend working at 48kHz for most projects. Higher sample rates (96kHz) are supported but offer diminishing returns for most applications. Export at your project's native rate — no need to up-sample.
Dry Hire
What's included in dry hire?
Full access to our control room including SSL X-Desk, PMC monitoring, outboard gear collection, and premium conversion. You operate the equipment yourself, though engineer assistance can be arranged at additional cost.
What are the dry hire rates?

Can I bring my own equipment?
Yes, you're welcome to bring your own gear to integrate with our setup. Let us know in advance so we can prepare for your session.
